Christmas Padel Social: A Run Sheet for a Festive Americano

A Christmas padel social for more than four people needs a format. Without one, it turns into four people playing the same match for two hours while everyone else watches.

An Americano fixes that. Everyone plays with everyone, nobody needs a partner, and there's a leaderboard to argue about at the bar. This page is the whole run sheet: rotations for 8, 12 or 16 players, a two-hour timetable, fancy dress and Secret Santa rules that work on a padel court, and a score sheet you can print.

How an Americano works, in 30 seconds

You play doubles, but you score on your own. Each round you get a new partner and new opponents. Every point your pair wins goes on your personal total, and the player with the most points at the end wins. Padel.fyi sums it up neatly: your score is the sum of all your rounds, and the number of players should divide by four.

Matches are played to a fixed number of points, not sets. Padel Browser says 16, 21 or 24 are the usual targets. Play the target as a total rather than a race, so every game adds up to the same number. In a 16-point game, each player serves four points in a row, then it moves on. Scores look like 9-7 or 11-5, and nobody gets a better or worse draw because their match went long.

New to padel, or bringing someone who is? Point them at our beginner's guide first. They'll be fine.

The two-hour timetable

Two hours of court time is the sweet spot. Padel.fyi says eight players on two courts takes about two hours. Here's how to fill it.

Time What happens
15 min before Arrive. Names on the sheet, presents on the pile, costume photo
0:00 Warm up on court. Ten minutes, everyone hitting with everyone
0:10 Round 1 starts
0:10 to 1:34 Seven rounds of 12 minutes (8 or 16 players) or six rounds of 14 minutes (12 players)
1:34 Last scores in. Add up totals
1:40 Prizes, costume vote, Secret Santa
2:00 Off court on time, so the next booking isn't waiting

The one rule that keeps this on track: a timer. Set it for 11 minutes per round (13 for 12 players). When it goes, finish the point you're on and write the score down, even if the game isn't done. That leaves a minute to swap courts. Without a timer, one slow court holds up the whole evening.

The rotations

Give everyone a number when they arrive. Then follow the grid. Court 1 is the first match listed, court 2 the second, and so on.

8 players, 2 courts, 7 rounds

This is the best format of the three. Over seven rounds, everyone partners every other player exactly once and plays against each of them twice. Play 16 points a round.

Round Court 1 Court 2
1 1+2 v 3+7 4+6 v 5+8
2 1+3 v 6+8 2+7 v 4+5
3 1+4 v 7+8 2+6 v 3+5
4 1+5 v 3+4 2+8 v 6+7
5 1+6 v 2+4 3+8 v 5+7
6 1+7 v 5+6 2+3 v 4+8
7 1+8 v 2+5 3+6 v 4+7

12 players, 3 courts, 6 rounds

There isn't time for a full round robin with 12, so this grid does the next best thing. Nobody partners the same person twice, and nobody plays against the same person more than twice. Play 20 points a round, five serves each.

Round Court 1 Court 2 Court 3
1 8+10 v 5+11 2+4 v 1+7 9+12 v 3+6
2 3+12 v 5+7 10+11 v 4+9 2+8 v 1+6
3 2+11 v 8+12 1+4 v 3+5 9+10 v 6+7
4 7+10 v 6+12 1+2 v 4+11 5+8 v 3+9
5 1+12 v 8+9 3+4 v 2+6 7+11 v 5+10
6 5+12 v 1+11 4+7 v 6+9 2+10 v 3+8

16 players, 4 courts, 7 rounds

Split into two groups of eight. Group A (players 1 to 8) uses courts 1 and 2. Group B (players 9 to 16) uses courts 3 and 4. Both groups run the 8-player grid above at the same time; group B just adds 8 to every number.

Because everyone plays exactly the same number of points, totals compare fairly across both groups. Highest score out of all 16 wins.

If your group has very mixed levels

Try a Mexicano instead. Padel Browser describes it as an Americano where you re-rank players by total points after every round and pair them by rank, which suits mixed-skill groups. You lose the printed grid, but the strong players end up playing each other and the matches stay close.

Fancy dress rules that work on a padel court

Fancy dress is half the fun of a Christmas social. It's also how someone ends up taking a ball to the face because their beard slipped over their eyes. A few house rules:

  1. Nothing over the eyes or ears. You need to see the ball and hear your partner shout "yours".
  2. Your own trainers stay on. No elf boots, no slippers. The LTA's advice is that any comfortable activewear and trainers are fine, with non-marking soles for indoor courts.
  3. The antler rule. The first time a hat, beard or headband falls off mid-point, replay the point. After that, it's the point lost. You'll be amazed how quickly the reindeer ears come off.
  4. Costumes on for round one, then optional. Take the group photo, play one round in full kit, then strip down to what you can actually move in.
  5. Vote before you sweat. Do the costume vote at the start, so nobody has to keep a Santa suit on for 90 minutes to stay in the running.

Not a fancy dress group? Pick a dress code instead. Everyone in a Christmas jumper for the photo (our Christmas Jumper Day page has the padel version), or everyone in the same tee. It looks great in the pictures and nobody's tripping over tinsel. On a cold court, have a look at what to layer underneath in our winter padel guide.

A Secret Santa that's decided on court

Here's the twist that makes it a padel game rather than a gift swap. Nobody draws names. Everyone brings one wrapped present at the agreed limit and puts it on the pile.

  • Picking order comes from the leaderboard, in reverse. Last place picks first. The winner picks last.
  • Anyone after the first pick can steal instead of opening. A present can only be stolen once, then it's safe.
  • The winner's power move. Picking last means they can steal the best present on the table, if it hasn't already been stolen.

It keeps the bottom half of the table smiling, and it gives the winner something to be smug about beyond a number on a sheet. For present ideas that suit the limit, our stocking fillers under £30 has a list, or browse the accessories.

Prizes

Keep it to two: the winner and the wooden spoon. Both deserve a laugh.

I'd go for a tee each. The Padel & Pints tee is made for exactly this night, a 305 g/m² heavyweight cotton tee, cut oversized, £48. Every £48 heavyweight tee is in our 2 for £90 deal, applied automatically at checkout, so the winner and the wooden spoon both get one for £90. Want a bigger top prize? The Mk1 Box Hoodie is £75 and ships free in the UK on its own.

Clothing is made to order and takes 7 to 10 working days in the UK. The last UK order date for Christmas is 10 December 2026 (full details in our Christmas delivery dates guide). For a social in the week before Christmas, order the prizes in November and stop worrying about it.

The score sheet

Print this page, or copy the table into your notes app. One row per player, one box per round. Add up the totals at the end. If two players tie, whoever won more rounds takes it.

For 12 players, add four rows and stop at R6. For 16, print two sheets, one per group.

FAQ

How long does a Christmas padel Americano take? With eight players on two courts, about two hours of court time. That's ten minutes of warm-up, seven 12-minute rounds and a bit of time for prizes at the end.

What if we have an odd number, like 9 or 13? One player sits out each round, taking turns, and you swap them into the grid by hand. Give whoever sits out half the round's points (8 in a 16-point game, 10 in a 20-point game), so the table stays fair. Better still, ask the spare person to run the timer and the score sheet for a round.

Is an Americano too much for beginners? No. Short games, a new partner every round and points that count even when you lose make it one of the friendliest formats there is. If the levels are very far apart, run a Mexicano instead.

Can you really play padel in fancy dress? Yes, with a few rules. Keep your eyes and ears clear, keep your own trainers on and take the bulky stuff off after the first round. Indoor courts need non-marking soles, costume or not.
