A padel grip sock is a sports sock with grip pads on the sole. The pads hold the sock against the inside of your shoe, so your foot moves around less in it. That's the whole idea.
They aren't magic and they aren't a gimmick either. Here's how they differ from the sports socks you already own, how to pick the right size, the return rule worth knowing before you open the pack, and how to wash them so the grip keeps doing its job.
Grip socks vs normal sports socks
A normal sports sock is soft fabric all the way round. It does a good job of comfort and soaking up sweat. What it doesn't do is hold on to anything. Your foot, the sock and the insole are three separate layers, and they can shift against each other.
A grip sock adds pads to the sole, facing down onto the insole. That gives the sock something to hold on to, so the foot inside it stays put.
| Normal sports sock | Padel grip sock | |
|---|---|---|
| Sole | Plain fabric | Grip pads |
| What keeps your foot in place | The shoe alone | The shoe, plus pads against the insole |
| Main job | Comfort and sweat | Comfort, plus less movement inside the shoe |
| Good for | Gym, running, everyday | Padel sessions |
One thing grip socks don't do: they don't change how your shoe grips the court. That's down to the outsole and the surface you're playing on. The pads sit between your foot and the insole, so their job ends at the insole. If you're sliding on the court itself, look at your shoes first.
When you'll notice the difference
You'll feel it most if you've ever had to stop between points to pull a sock back up, or felt your foot drift forward in the shoe when you pull up hard at the net. Those are both things happening inside the shoe, which is exactly where the pads are.
If your current socks never move and you've never thought about them, you might not feel much. That's fine. I've played in a lot of socks, at clubs across London, Essex and Manchester and on trips to the Algarve, Malaga and Madrid, and honesty beats overselling a £14 pair.
Sizing: picking your band
Our grip socks come in two bands, UK 4-7 and UK 8-11. Socks are true to size, so go by your shoe size and nothing else.
| Your UK shoe size | Band to pick |
|---|---|
| 4, 5, 6 or 7 | UK 4-7 |
| 8, 9, 10 or 11 | UK 8-11 |
A few things that trip people up:
- Use your padel shoe size, not your clothing size. If you wear a large in tees, that tells you nothing here.
- Don't size down. Our heavyweight tees are cut oversized, so people often size down on those. Socks don't work like that. Pick the band your shoe size sits in.
- Shoes in EU or US sizes? Look at the label inside the tongue of your padel shoe. If it shows a UK size, go by that. If it doesn't, email us with what it says.
- Half sizes and anything outside 4 to 11. The page lists whole sizes only. If you're a 7.5, or smaller than a 4 or bigger than an 11, email hello@padelism.co.uk before you order and we'll tell you straight.
Buying them for someone else? The padel stocking fillers guide has a sneaky way to find out their shoe size.
The return rule: check the band before you open the pack
We do 30-day returns on everything. Socks come with one extra condition, for hygiene reasons: they can only come back unworn, unused and in their original packaging. Once a pair has been worn, nobody else can buy it. That's all the rule is about.
So the order of things matters:
- When they arrive, check the band on the pack against your shoe size.
- Wrong band? Leave the pack sealed. Size exchanges are accepted, and an unopened pack can come back for the other band.
- Right band? Open them and play.
Return postage is on you unless the item is faulty or we sent the wrong thing. Use a tracked service. To start, you need your order number and the email you used at checkout.
If something's faulty, damaged or not what you ordered, email returns@padelism.co.uk within 7 days of delivery with your order number and a photo. We'll send a replacement or a full refund, postage included. Everything else is on the returns page.
Washing grip socks so the grip keeps working
The care on our product page is short:
- Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle
- Don't bleach
- Tumble dry low, if you use a dryer
- Don't dry clean
- There's no reason to iron a sock, and the page says to keep the iron off any print, so leave the pads alone
A few habits on top of that, which are just common sense:
- Wash them after every session. A sweaty pair balled up in a kit bag for three days is nobody's friend.
- Get them out of the bag the same day. Damp socks sealed in a bag go off fast.
- Keep two pairs if you play twice a week. One in the wash, one in the bag.
- Look at the pads now and then. When the pads have worn smooth, that pair has done its job.
Where they fit in your kit
Most of what Padelism makes is for before and after a game. Grip socks and overgrips are the exceptions, made to be used mid-rally. For the rest of your playing kit, the what to wear for padel guide covers it top to toe.
In winter, pack a dry second pair for after the session. The winter padel guide explains why. Going away to play? The padel holiday packing list works out how many pairs a trip needs.
A pair is £14. On their own they won't reach free UK delivery, which starts at £75. A Mk1 Box Hoodie is £75 by itself, so it already ships free, and a pair of socks rides along with it. Everything is made to order: allow 7 to 10 working days in the UK and 7 to 14 outside it. For Christmas, the last UK order date is 10 December 2026.
You'll find the socks, overgrips and the rest of the small kit in padel accessories.
FAQ
Do grip socks actually make a difference in padel? They make a difference inside the shoe. The pads hold the sock to the insole, so your foot moves less. They don't change how your shoe grips the court. If your feet already feel locked in, you may not notice much.
Do I wear grip socks instead of my normal socks, or over them? Instead of. The pads need to sit against the insole of your shoe. Another sock underneath only adds a layer that can slide.
I'm a UK 7.5. Which band should I get? Our page lists whole sizes only, so we'd rather not guess. Email hello@padelism.co.uk before you order and we'll tell you which band to pick.
How do I wash padel grip socks? Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle, no bleach, and a low tumble dry if you use a dryer. Wash them after every session and get them out of your kit bag the same day.
How many pairs of grip socks do I need? One pair per session between washes. If you play once a week, one pair covers you. Twice a week, keep two so one can be in the wash while the other is in your bag.
